Process
Debb VanDelinder works using an artistic process called Scanography, also known as scanner photography. It is the process of capturing images using a flatbed scanner with a CCD (charge-coupled device) array capturing device. Fine art Scanography differs from traditional document scanning, VanDelinder scans objects (usually altered natural objects) to create her works. Scanography also differs from standard photography, due to the nature of the scanner's operation. Instead of a single lens, the entire mechanism (mirrors, lens, filter and CCD array) make up the scan head. The process records extremely fine detail with a rather shallow depth of field and produces a high, optical resolution, digital file (or "digital negative") for printmaking. VanDelinder often heavily manipulates her works using Adobe PhotoShop between the scanning and the printing process. Her works are comprised of many layers and are often constructed from multiple scans.
VanDelinder has worked with a variety of digital substrates to make prints during her career. Through 2010 the majority of her work was printed to archival canvas. Since 2011 VanDelinder's work has been printed as one of a kind pieces or in very limited editions on aluminum panels. Her images are infused into the surface of the aluminum surface through a high temperature image dye-transfer process. These panels are then float mounted or inset framed for hanging. The resulting print is lightweight and resonates with incredibly brilliant color. These prints have a non-reflective, matte surface.
