Bio
Debb VanDelinder is best known for works in Scanography, also known as scanner photography. Notable, her large-scale images, juxtaposed with unusual combinations of natural and man-made objects. She masterfully composes work in Photoshop, resulting in images that demand your attention and then envelop you in exquisite detail and lush color. Once mesmerized, you are invited to ponder her subject matter, extracting meaning from carefully chosen symbols, weaving a narrative of the human condition.
Pennsylvania raised, she studied at Mansfield University, earning BA Studio Art and M.Ed. Art Education degrees. Her post-graduate work at Elmira College focused on digital imaging and photography, studying extensively with photographer, Jan Kather and painter Marc Dennis. Her work migrated to Scanography in 1998, after early traditional explorations.
She was a 2002 finalist at the MacWorld Expo Digital Art Gallery. A Regional Artist Commission from The Arts of the Southern Finger Lakes (2004), and a Strategic Opportunity Stipend from NYFA (2010), followed.
Decadence (2010) at EVOKE Contemporary in Santa Fe (curated by John O’Hern), was followed by Buffalo’s Echo Art Fair (2011/2013). Her work was in Representing Representation VIII at Arnot Art Museum and the 79th Annual National Exhibition at Cooperstown Art Association (2014). She exhibited with Riad Miah and Nathan Sullivan in Allegory & Alchemy at Novado Gallery in Jersey City (2017).
VanDelinder has been featured in: American Art Collector (November 2006), The Santa Fe Reporter (July 2011), Professional Artist Magazine (March 2012) and the Syracuse New Times (August 2014). She lectured on the relationship between art and technology at venues including the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, Mansfield University and The Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center. In addition to being a working artist, VanDelinder recently concluded 33 years as a secondary art educator. She continues as an Adjunct at Elmira College. Exhibit A in Corning, NY, represents her.
"VanDelinder pushes the bounds of photography. " (American Art Collector Magazine, November 2006).
“Debb VanDelinder presents subjects at close range in a format large enough to give her subject matter an otherworldly quality. Her sense of inquisitive fascination is apparent and lush new perspectives that often take on multiple meanings are her reward; and ours." (Ann Welles, Curator Houghton Gallery, 171 Cedar Arts, 2008)
"In her Scanography art, VanDelinder uses still-life objects as metaphors for the human condition" (Professional Artist Magazine, March 2012).
"She doesn't create images through a camera's lens; instead she captures images by using a flatbed scanner. The works depict everyday objects, emphasize light and color, and draw on themes such as the cycle of life..... The piece encompasses more than a good-looking piece of fruit; it also contrasts appearance and substance, surface and what's underneath it." (Carl Mellor, Syracuse New Times, August 2014).
